Fire destroys Baldwin Township home

The Jerry and Joyce Mueller home located about four miles south of Princeton was destroyed by fire Sunday.

Joyce was at home about 10 a.m. when she noticed the fire and Jerry had just stopped by the house to get something for shearing sheep that day.

Jerry said Joyce tried to call 911 but the phone was dead so Jerry went to the house they rent out on their property and made the call there.

Princeton Fire and Rescue received the call about 10:05 a.m. Department captain Brad Hodgson said his department called for Zimmerman to assist by bringing water and manpower because the Princeton department was short of firefighters that day. Ten members were at a school and on weekends there are usually fewer members around, Hodgson said.

He said his department also called the Milaca Fire Department to send people to stand by at the Princeton station to cover other calls that might come in.

Firefighters fought the blaze steadily for five hours and some returned later that day and the next because of flareups.

Hodgson said Monday the cause of the fire is unknown but that it started in the garage. The fire destroyed the garage, the roof and main level of the home, which had a basement and attic.

Firefighters were able to get out some personal possessions including some photos, a purse and some papers.
